An original equipment manufacturer’s concept for an environmental control unit (ECU) that protected process chemicals in its medical device was brought to life by Air Innovations. According to Air Innovations President and CEO Michael Wetzel, PE, AI’s job was to refine the concept to meet the customer’s performance and integration specifications, and then manufacture it. âBecause the customer sells these units to a global customer base, part of the challenge was to design a calculator that could maintain accurate temperature and humidity levels under a wide range of different environmental conditions while running 24/7. / 7 all year round.
âTo maintain the OEM’s environmental needs, the cooling coil had to operate well below freezing, with no defrost interruptions,â Wetzel explained. âThe solution that was developed relies on two independent cooling coils and alternating process fans, managed by software and various sensor inputs to determine the switching intervals. The challenge for Air Innovations was all the more considerable as the components had to fit in a space equivalent to the size of a small microwave oven. The OEM product was recently approved by the FDA and is now in full production.
Air Innovations creates specialized HVAC and environmental control solutions for original equipment manufacturers around the world as well as its own branded products, including the patented IsolationAir®, a portable contamination control unit for hospitals, nursing homes and emergency preparedness. The company is focused on the design, testing and manufacturing of products requiring precise control of temperature, humidity, pressure and air filtration. These are used in military, homeland security, R&D, pharmaceutical, electronics, industrial, retail and consumer applications. Air Innovations’ technical expertise includes:
- Temperature control tolerances on its most sophisticated products as precise as +/- 0.008 ° F
- Humidity control tolerances within +/- 0.5%
- Direct expansion, chilled water or thermoelectric capacities
- Large filtration capacities (high efficiency particulate air (HEPA), ultra-low particulate air (ULPA), molecular)
- Pressure control
- Case designs ranging from benchtop to room size
Air Innovations, headquartered in Syracuse, NY since 1986, provides customers with concept development, prototyping and testing, manufacturing in the United States, from small runs to mass-produced, regulatory submissions, international distribution and installation, service and warranty support.
