Shanghai Electric implements green building practices to protect Dubai’s natural environment

As the official partner of the China Pavilion at the Dubai World Expo 2020, Shanghai Electric participated in the construction of the fourth phase of 950 MW of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park. The project, which includes a 700 MW Concentrated Solar Power Plant (CSP) and a 250 MW Photovoltaic (PV) Plant, covers an area of 44 square kilometers, the equivalent of 6,162 football fields. At the center of the CSP plant is the 100 MW solar tower, which is 262 meters tall – the tallest of its kind in the world – and is expected to provide clean energy to more than 320,000 people. Dubai households and reduce 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions when completed.

Preserving existing biodiversity was one of Shanghai Electric’s key objectives when planning and carrying out construction work. The Company has implemented a series of measures with the help of conservation and ecological experts to strengthen its environmental management and ensure the safety of the flora and fauna ecosystem. During the planning phase, Shanghai Electric conducted extensive surveys and research on local animal and plant habitats, which paved the way for its wildlife relocation project.

In collaboration with local animal welfare agencies, Shanghai Electric has set up a team of specialists to study animal behavior and find an effective solution to guide wild animals off the construction site. The team then decided to fence off the site and put food and water at the openings 200 meters apart to attract the animals so they could move them safely to other areas. In this way, Shanghai Electric has protected a myriad of native animal species Dubai including lizards, camels, sword antelopes and foxes.

Recognizing Shanghai Electric’s contribution to environmental protection during the construction of the Dubai CSP project, Emirates Environmental Group, the largest NGO dedicated to environmental conservation in the United Arab Emirates, invited Shanghai Electric to participate at the “For Our Emirates We Plant” event in 2020 and 2021, and planted eight Sidra trees in the Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah on behalf of Shanghai Electric.

“The Dubai The project covers a large area of land that is home to numerous wild plants and animals, complicating the environmental management measures necessary to maintain the integrity of local biodiversity. The team took into account all the factors that could pose a threat to wildlife, protecting the local ecological system while helping the Dubai government to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 ”, declared Zhao Hui, the director of Dubai project.

To face up to its responsibility to the environment, Shanghai Electric also reviewed measures to conserve resources and reduce environmental pollution caused by waste generated during construction work. The Shanghai Electric team has collected plastic bottles, glass bottles, cans and print cartridges for centralized recycling since construction began, with a recorded volume of recycled items in 2021 three times higher to that of the previous year.

World leader in renewable energies, Shanghai Electric has reshaped the global energy mix by promoting green development, by opening the wind and photovoltaic revolution to meet global climate challenges. Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric will continue to promote innovation in green technologies, leveraging its high-quality clean products to facilitate the global transition to a more sustainable economy.
