As an official partner of the China Pavilion at the Dubai World Expo 2020, Shanghai Electric participated in the construction of the 950 MW fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The project, which includes a 700 MW concentrated solar power plant (CSP) and a 250 MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant, covers an area of 44 square kilometers, the equivalent of 6,162 football fields. At the center of the CSP plant is the 100MW solar power tower, which is 262 meters tall – the tallest of its kind in the world – and is expected to provide clean energy to more than 320,000 dubai households and will reduce 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions when completed.
Preserving the existing biodiversity was one of Shanghai Electric’s main objectives when planning and carrying out the construction works. The Company has implemented a series of measures with the help of conservation and ecology experts to strengthen its environmental management and ensure the safety of the flora and fauna ecosystem. During the planning phase, Shanghai Electric conducted extensive surveys and research on the habitats of local animals and plants, which paved the way for its wildlife relocation project.
In collaboration with local animal protection agencies, Shanghai Electric has set up a team of specialists to study animal behaviors and find an effective solution to guide wild animals away from the construction site. The team then decided to fence off the site and put food and water at the openings spaced 200 meters apart to attract the animals so they could move them safely to other areas. In this way, Shanghai Electric has protected a myriad of animal species native to dubai including lizards, camels, sword antelopes and foxes.
Recognizing Shanghai Electric’s contribution to environmental protection during the construction of the Dubai CSP project, Emirates Environmental Group, the largest NGO dedicated to environmental conservation in the UAE, has invited Shanghai Electric to participate in the “For Our Emirates We Plant” event in 2020 and 2021, and planted eight Sidra trees in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah on behalf of Shanghai Electric.
“The dubai The project covers a large land area that is home to many wild plants and animals, complicating the environmental management measures needed to maintain the integrity of local biodiversity. The team considered all factors that could pose a threat to wildlife, protecting the local ecological system while helping dubai government to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050,” said Zhaohuithe director of the dubai project.
To fulfill its responsibility to the environment, Shanghai Electric has also considered measures to conserve resources and reduce environmental pollution caused by waste generated during construction work. The Shanghai Electric team has collected plastic bottles, glass bottles, cans and print cartridges for centralized recycling since the start of construction, with the recorded volume of recycled items in 2021 being three times higher to that of the previous year.
A world leader in renewable energy, Shanghai Electric has reshaped the global energy mix by promoting green development, unlocking the wind and photovoltaic revolution to address global climate challenges. Going forward, Shanghai Electric will continue to promote innovation in green technologies, leveraging its clean, high-quality products to facilitate the global transition to a more sustainable economy.
